This story started a while ago when a little girl with Down Syndrome was abandoned by her birth mother. She was then rejected by 20 different adoptive families, and her fate seemed very uncertain. Her life took a happy turn when a man by the name of Luca Trapanese entered her life. And here started the emotional journey of Alba and Luca, a little girl and her adoptive dad.
Here at Bright Side, we’ve been following Alba and Luca’s story all the way through. And today, we want to show you how this wonderful duo is living their best life, years after a little Alba got adopted.
It may really seem like Luca and Alba’s first meeting was a case of the stars aligning. Luca had just gotten out of a serious relationship with his boyfriend and Alba was put up for adoption by her biological mother. By the time they met, this little girl had already been rejected by 20 adoptive families. In July 2017, Luca rushed to rescue her.
Now the 2 of them are really inseparable. Luca had been dreaming of becoming a father for a long time, but being gay and single seemed to be quite a challenge when it came to adopting. Surrogacy is not an option for Italy and gay parents aren’t recorded as co-parents on birth certificates.
Luca was told that he’d only be able to adopt a kid with an illness or a severe disability. And he was absolutely OK with that.
There’re so many heart-warming posts on Instagram where this duo shows that the life of this 45-year-old man revolves around his precious princess. “I am a single father in love with his daughter,” he writes in his bio.
Alba is 4 years old now, and her life in her tiny family has been filled with incredible moments. Luca accepts fatherhood as the role of a lifetime. “I am made to be a father!” he says in his numerous interviews. He loves to dedicate himself to his daughter and her development, and her life now is on the top of his priority list.
The duo adores spending time together. They both especially enjoy dancing and singing, and Luca admits that Alba is a real star in both.
They have had many successes and have reached a lot of milestones side-by-side. Luca recalled that the most exciting moment for him was both when Alba called him “Dad” and when she walked for the first time.
For any child, learning to walk is a huge milestone. But for children with Down Syndrome, the first steps and words are often even more special.
Alba is not like other children, and her dad has made it his life goal to help her be heard. His greatest struggle is to make other people understand that Alba is, above all, a person who needs to be considered for all of her needs. Luca is convinced that people must fight against mental barriers and any type of exclusion.
He believes that Alba will meet people who will value her talents and won’t consider her to be just a person with a handicap. He insists that all children are incredible. And special kids are capable, strong, and deal with much more adversity than their non-disabled peers.
This dad wrote a book called, (in English) We Will Amaze You With Special Flaws. This book speaks out loud about disability and diversity. It describes 3 children who turn their disabilities into special gifts. And this is a way of thinking that he tries to raise in Alba every single day.
To the fathers who want to adopt in the future, Luca says: “Adopting a kid is the most rewarding thing that you can do. You have to make this choice consciously and with full awareness, without looking back. Being a father is a calling.”
What is something about the story of Alba and Luca that touched a chord in your soul? What would you like to wish for Luca as a father?
